We want idi.africa to be usable by everyone, including people who browse with a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or with motion reduced.
What we aim for
We work towards the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. That is a target we are actively working on rather than one we claim to have fully met, and this page says plainly where we currently fall short.
What works today
- A skip link so keyboard users can jump straight to the main content.
- Every image carries alternative text.
- The navigation, including the mobile menu, is operable by keyboard, closes with Escape, and returns focus where you left it.
- Visible focus outlines on links, buttons and form fields.
- Form fields have real labels, and errors are announced rather than shown only in colour.
- Animation is reduced automatically if your device is set to prefer reduced motion.
- Status is never conveyed by colour alone.
Where we know we fall short
- Some older case-study pages have decorative images that are larger than they need to be, which is slow on a limited connection.
- A small number of legacy colour combinations do not yet meet the 4.5:1 contrast ratio for body text, and we are working through them.
- Documents published as PDFs are not all tagged for screen readers. If you need one in another format, ask us and we will provide it.
